Rhodochrosite on matrix from the Foote Mine (Kings Mountain area), North Carolina, USA, showing a distinct peach-to-salmon rhodochrosite crystal perched on a sparkling drusy quartz surface.
Matrix appears to be drusy quartz on pegmatite material (quartz with pale feldspar/albite common in this district). The Foote Mine is one of the most historically important pegmatite localities in the United States: it was worked for lithium-bearing minerals and became famous among collectors for producing classic specimens and an unusual range of pegmatite species. Even small thumbnails like this are collected for the locality itself, because “Foote Mine” is a cornerstone name in American mineral collecting
