Paraíba tourmaline was first discovered in the late 1980s in Paraíba State, Brazil, and immediately revolutionized the gem world. The original site, near São José da Batalha, produced only small quantities before becoming nearly exhausted. Subsequent finds in nearby Brazilian states, as well as Nigeria and Mozambique, have extended the term “Paraíba-type” to include copper-bearing tourmalines with similar optical characteristics.
