Libyan Desert Glass formed around 29 million years ago near the Libya-Egypt border, likely from a meteorite impact or airburst. Composed almost entirely of silica, it formed under extreme heat and is still found scattered across the desert.
The material was used in antiquity and is famously associated with Tutankhamun, whose burial treasure included a carved scarab of Libyan Desert Glass. This piece is carved in the same traditional form.
