Japanese Rainbow Garnet

Rainbow garnet from Nara Prefecture, Japan, showing strong iridescence with flashes of orange, yellow and green. The effect is caused by interference within very fine internal layers, which separate light into spectral colors.

These stones are especially interesting because of the cutting. According to our supplier, the elderly cutter who polished them is no longer producing them. He adjusted each stone individually so the rainbow would remain visible not only face-up, but from the side as well, planning the angles for maximum effect.

We were fortunate to acquire several from the remaining material
