Indonesian Pyrite Crystal

Pyrite takes its name from the Greek word "pyr," meaning "fire," a nod to its historical use in striking sparks. More widely recognized by its nickname "Fool’s Gold," pyrite’s metallic golden luster has misled countless gold prospectors, especially since it often occurs alongside actual gold deposits.

Unlike gold, which is soft and malleable, pyrite is brittle and will shatter under stress. Its distinct cubic or pyritohedral crystal forms and brassy metallic sheen are reliable visual clues. A simple streak test—scraping the mineral across unglazed porcelain—produces a black streak for pyrite, while gold leaves a yellow streak.

This Indonesian specimen displays sharp, well-striated crystal faces with excellent metallic luster. Under magnification, a vivid patch of orange mineral is visible nestled among the pyrite crystals, likely calcite stained by iron oxides—adding a splash of contrasting color and interest to the piece.
