These Fordite cabochons originate from Michigan, USA, and are often referred to as Motor Agate. They formed during the mid-20th century, when automobiles were painted by hand in large factories. Overspray built up on the racks, layer after layer, and each coat was hardened in the baking ovens used to cure the paint. In some cases, this created hundreds of colorful layers. Once the buildup became excessive, it was removed and discarded — later cut into the striking pieces we see today.
That process has long since disappeared. Modern automotive plants use electrostatic painting, which leaves almost no overspray. As a result, vintage Fordite is no longer produced and remains a one-of-a-kind relic of American manufacturing history
