Unheated Aquamarine – Songea, Tanzania

A square step-cut aquamarine with soft greenish-blue tones, presented in its natural unheated state. Many aquamarines on the market are routinely heated to achieve a uniform blue color, but unheated stones like this retain their natural mix of subtle seafoam and pastel shades. Tanzanian sources such as Songea are less widely known than Brazil or Madagascar, making material from this locality particularly interesting to collectors. Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family, which also includes emerald and morganite, and its name comes from the Latin “aqua marina,” meaning seawater, a reference to its color.
