Vintage Fordite

This fascinating Fordite cabochon comes from Michigan, USA

Vintage Fordite is also commonly known as Motor Agate.  It was produced during the process of hand spraying vehicles in large automotive factories in decades past.  The oversprayed paint 'slag' accumulated and created layers of colorful enamel that were cured and hardened at high temperatures in the manufacturing process - sometimes 100's of times for the deeper paint layers!  When buildup became obstructive it was removed, thus creating the layered colorful chunks you see today.

This hand spraying paint process for vehicles is no longer used.  An electrostatic method is now employed that creates very little overspray.  Vintage Fordite is a relic of our manufacturing past.  It is truly a one of a kind material.
