Sugilite is a rare manganese silicate prized for its vivid purple hues, ranging from deep violet to bright magenta-and this set has them all!
The Wessels Mine in South Africa is the most significant source, producing some of the finest material ever found. Originally discovered in Japan in 1944, sugilite only gained recognition when gem-quality deposits were uncovered in South Africa.
Despite its desirability in the gem world, sugilite has never been the primary focus of mining operations at Wessels. The mine owners are interested in manganese, and many miners have reportedly smuggled sugilite out in their lunch boxes, recognizing its value long before it was commercially appreciated, reflecting the unusual path that some of the world’s rarest gemstones take before reaching collectors and lapidaries.
