Assorted trio of Cantera Opal Cabs from La Trinidad, Mexico.
Cantera opals are formed when silica-rich water seeps into cracks and crevices in the limestone bedrock. Over time, the water evaporates, leaving behind a deposit of opal. The play-of-color in cantera opals is caused by the refraction of light as it passes through the opal's layers. This refraction creates the illusion of movement and depth, which is one of the things that makes cantera opals so desirable.
