A vivid orange cabochon from the now-depleted Loliondo Spessartite deposit in northern Tanzania. The color here is pure flame—an intense, juicy orange made possible by the manganese content in the garnet’s structure. Unlike most garnets, Spessartite often has a glassy clarity that lights up under direct light, and this piece captures that effect beautifully.
Loliondo Spessartite burst onto the market in the mid-2000s and disappeared almost as quickly. The original deposit produced a short-lived but unforgettable run of gems, many with this kind of saturated color and bright, open appearance. What’s left now is in private hands or old collections—making any clean piece from this source increasingly collectible.
