Flame Red Mahenge Spinel. Spinels from the Mahenge region of Tanzania became world-famous almost overnight after their 2007 discovery, with colors like this—bright, fiery, and unheated—leading the charge.
Unlike many colored stones on the market, spinel is singly refractive, meaning its color stays clean and undiluted even in bright light. That’s one of the reasons it’s been mistaken for ruby in antique jewelry for centuries.
