Japanese Rainbow Garnet exhibits a rare optical phenomenon called diffraction grating, where rainbow-like colors appear due to internal structural layering within the garnet itself. These stones are never treated—they emerge from the ground with this natural spectral brilliance.
The geometric cut shown here was done by a Japanese master lapidary who is now in his final years and no longer working. Our supplier told us plainly: “What you have and what's left in Japan is all there will be.” He precisely calculated each cut to highlight the rainbow not just from the top, but even from the side profile—something only a deeply experienced hand could accomplish. These stones are now both geological and artistic rarities
