The layered structure suggests it formed in an environment with periodic mineral deposition. The piece has been carved with a gold starfish, enhancing the natural scene while preserving the original characteristics of the quartz.

This came to us from an old collection in Bangkok Thailand. This was in the collection of a dealer for the last 40+ years. He said the carving was done by a renowned Chinese quartz carver named Chan Tao
