Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG)

Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG).  GGG is of the class of synthetic gems deemed "Historic Diamond Simulants."

Originally developed for scientific applications it was used as a diamond simulant in the 1970s but was quickly replaced by YAG for its higher hardness.  GGG is not to be overlooked though because it has a much closer appearance to natural diamond than YAG does.  GGG is also a considerably more rare diamond simulant that is typically only offered in white.

GGG crystals are produced by the Czochralski method.  It has an RI of 1.97 - 2.02, a DI of 38, and a Mohs hardness of 6.5 - 7.5. And with a SG greater than 7, it's one of the most dense gem material available. It cuts and polishes extremely well.

GGG is an interesting and rare piece of history for the collector or jeweler - they absolutely sparkle!
